Understanding the EN ISO374-1:2016 Test for Chemical Protective Gloves
Posted by Daisy FU onWhat is EN ISO 374-1:2016?
EN ISO 374-1:2016 is a European standard specifying the performance criteria and testing procedures for gloves designed to protect against hazardous chemicals and microorganisms. But how do we understand and interpret this standard? Let’s break it down.
Key Components of the Standard
Classification of Chemicals: The standard identifies 18 commonly used chemicals, grouped into six categories, against which gloves are tested to assess their protective capabilities. These chemicals include substances such as methanol, sodium hydroxide, and sulfuric acid, among others.
Performance Levels
Based on the breakthrough time (the time taken for the chemical to permeate through the glove material), there are 6 performance levels:
Classification types
Gloves are classified into 3 classification types based on permeation performance -TYPE A, TYPE B or TYPE C.
Note: The pictogram must have the marking Type A, Type B or Type C.
The EN ISO 374-1:2016 standard also includes protection against microorganisms and viruses (indicated by the VIRUS marking).
A glove claiming protection from bacteria and fungi must carry the following pictogram and warnings.
A glove claiming protection from virus, bacteria and fungi must carry the following pictogram and warnings.
How to understand the pictogram?
Let’s take the LANON V330 nitrile gloves as an example.
The V330 gloves are Type A chemical-resistant gloves, offering a breakthrough time of over 30 minutes against six specific types of chemicals. Additionally, these gloves provide protection against viruses, bacteria, and fungi.
The EN ISO 374-1:2016 standard provides a comprehensive framework for assessing and selecting chemical protective gloves. By understanding and applying this standard, you can ensure that your workers are adequately protected against chemical hazards, enhancing workplace safety and productivity. Always prioritize safety and make informed decisions based on the standard’s guidelines and your specific workplace requirements.
